LSSA Conference - 2018

LSSA Annual Conference: A Blueprint for our Future Profession

The LSSA Annual Conference will be held at the Century City Conference Centre in Cape Town on 23 and 24 March 2018 under the theme 'A Blueprint for the Future of our Profession'.

The first day of the programme will focus on a new representative professional body for attorneys to come into operation when the four provincial law societies fall away with the coming into operation of the Legal Practice Act 28 of 2014 in October this year. Issues to be workshopped in commissions include:

  • Membership and governance.
  • What must your professional body do for you?
  • Sustainability: Can we afford a professional body for attorneys?

Read the guest editorial by Co-Chairpersons Walid Brown and David Bekker in the December issue of De Rebus introducing this discussion.

Information sessions on the second day - Saturday, 24 March, will focus on the client-centric environment envisaged in the LPA:
Clients and fees: How section 35 of the Legal Practice Act envisages changing the way you deal with and charge your clients.

Transparent disciplinary processes: Fidelity Fund inspections; open disciplinary hearings; publication of outcomes, the role of the Legal Services Ombud.

A special session for young lawyers will look at the new world of work through the eyes of the Millennial legal practitioner: A new work-life outlook; the new workplace for digital natives, socialising on social media, work-life balance and social consciousness challenges for young lawyers.
