Access to information about home loans

Teboho Mahalemele, a lawyer at the Open Democracy Advice Centre, said that an application in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act was served on Nedbank on June 20.
He is representing a SANDF officer and is seeking access to records about the officer's home loan. According to Alison Tilley, the advice centre's manager this case is important because
"It is in the public interest to promote the disclosure by financial institutions of information regarding the provision of home loans. This promotes fair lending practices on the part of a variety of lending institutions, including Nedbank, and ensures confidence on the part of the public that decisions are fair".

Nedbank contends that giving the officer such information would be likely to cause harm to its commercial or financial interests.
