Practice Management

Doors swinging

The Precise Oxford Dictionary defines a paralegal as someone "trained in subsidiary legal matters", and with the housing boom in Scotland the number of paralegals carrying out conveyancing has increased dramatically. Given the wide variation in experience, the Law Society of Scotland and the Scottish Paralegal Association are looking at establishing a grading system for paralegals which will be based on qualifications and work experience.

Such a system will offer a comfort level to everyone as they will know what to expect from the paralegal and the level of responsibility which can be taken on. Paralegals often do the lion's share of conveyancing work in some firms, and with the proposed grading system they should be assured of professional development while keeping up to date with best possible practice.
