UK - All conveyancing in England and Wales could be carried out electronically by 2009, eradicating the need for paper documents, speeding up the process and enabling solicitors to find hold-ups in chains.
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs Baroness Ashton of Upholland said in a written statement to the House of Lords that electronic conveyancing could be made compulsory in England and Wales by 2009 or 2010. A prototype of the scheme is being tested and, if all goes well, solicitors across England and Wales should be able to use the system on a voluntary basis by 2008, with the system made compulsory by 2009 or 2010.
