R900 million rates bill

Johannesburg ratepayers are becoming accustomed to the unpredictability of the city's accounting department. In Andrew Macrae's case, the rates clearance bill of R900 022 832,64 pursuant to the sale of his R630 000 house sets a new precedent.

In another twist of absurdity when he phoned the council he was told that there was no mistake and the amount had to be paid "in cash". His attorney, Danie Botha applied to the High Court for an order compelling the city to issue the clearance certificate. Meanwhile City of Johannesburg head of communications Gabu Tugwana said that the amount was "clearly an error" and that the account - of between R20 000 and R30 000 will be investigated and finalised.
