Understanding auditing

Seminar Overview
The workshop has been specifically designed to provide all levels of staff engaged in the auditing of attorneys' accounts with a better understanding of the practical auditing of a law firm and its operations. Accordingly all senior and junior staff members as well as managers and partners are encouraged to attend.

Special focus will be directed on the practical audit procedures to be followed for conveyance matters (including an understanding of bridging finance transactions), collections, administrations and debt counselling matters, personal accident claims, litigation, commercial and other typical mandates undertaken by attorneys. The workshop will also deal with fraud detection, the rolling of cash and other related schemes.

This half day seminar will address the following:

Session 1

  • Understanding how a law firm operates
  • Trust and business concepts
  • Accounting records and cash flows
  • Trust investments
Session 2
  • The transfer procedure, understanding and accounting for disbursements and revenue recognition.
  • Understanding the different service activities and a detailed discussion on the audit procedures and audit evidence

The seminar will not address specific formal auditing processes regarding the Law Society Rules and the provisions of the Attorneys Act, as dealt with at previous SAICA presentations.

About the Presenter
Vincent Faris CA(SA) has extensive experience rendering audit, accounting, forensic, litigation support and management consulting services to all levels of the legal profession. Although retired as an active partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers since June 1998, Vincent continues to render these services. For many years, Vincent has been an active member and is currently the chairperson of the Accountant Members of the SAICA Joint Attorneys and Accountants Committee (JAAC). He presents seminars, workshops and lectures for both the provincial and national bodies of the organised legal profession. Vincent conducts forensic investigations for the Law Society of the Northern Provinces, has acted as an arbitrator and has assisted the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA) in disciplinary matters relating to Attorneys' Trust Accounts.
