Up against the wall

According to the order, Mark Gilbert will have to restore his home - one of a row of six Edwardian houses - to its original condition. This will mean his having to rebuild his boundary wall in the same style as that of the other houses and plaster and paint it in a colour approved by Mark Stranex, the applicant. He will also have to replace the original upstairs door and front and back windows. In addition he is prohibited from building a balcony on the back of his house.

In motivating his application Advocate Stranex said that the wall was "very high" and would "detract from the ambience of my house" - potentially reducing its value by R100 000.
