Practice Management

What is it really …?

This article, published in the December 2007 De Rebus, is the first in a series aimed at increasing the productivity of smaller firms through practice management. Practice management is misunderstood, as it goes beyond the administrative level (organising stationery) to identifying strategies for the organisation as a whole.

To quote the author:
"Practice management needs to see financial management, information technology, human resources, marketing, strategy, management and administration as tools to enable it to reach its real objective … to increase the profits of the organisation." And the practice manager's job is to drive this.

In short, a practice manager needs a host of skills including an understanding of the legal profession, financial strategies, people, technology and the ability to attract and to keep clients.
